Welcome to our historic oasis
“Orkney Park”
A Film by Brice Goldberg
The documentary narrates Mitch Deighan and his partner Mike Anderson’s journey to conserve a pristine natural area amidst an ever-changing urban environment, showcasing the realization of their vision through the spirited endeavors of a community of neighbors and partners.
Nestled behind row houses on an old cobbled street, Orkney Park is a hidden four-lot wooded parcel in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia. Undisturbed for years, it has evolved into a tranquil ecosystem rich with diverse wildlife. A majestic giant cottonwood tree shares the land with countless birds and squirrels, as well as the occasional raccoon, possum, groundhog or fox. A home for feathered and furry friends, this nature preserve also provides a haven for humans seeking to escape the built environment.
Friends of Orkney Park is a nonprofit focused on preserving the natural beauty of Orkney Park and ensuring that it will be safe from real estate development for years to come.
Our mission is to protect and restore this hidden plot of nature for the good of the neighborhood. Through our efforts, we hope to offer a retreat from the hustle and bustle of urban life and to instill an appreciation for nature in our community.
